Biographies of the Book Conference
Jill Bepler gave a talk entitled “Making books matter: Dynastic women and the composition of book objects in the early modern period” at the international conference “Biographies of the Book” held at Wolfenbüttel from 5th to 8th April 2016. She examined ways in which women used bindings, portraits and paratexts to create unique objects, using them as as elements of their political and confessional strategies.
The conference was organized by the research consortium Marbach-Weimar-Wolfenbüttel and was concerned with a broad spectrum of material aspects of book culture. William Sherman (Victoria and Albert Museum London) gave the opening address on “The Social Lives of Books”.
